Grand Rapids Firefighter Edward DeMaagd is the American Legion Furniture City Post's Firefighter of the Year. Firefighter DeMaagd is the 45th GRFD member to receive the Firefighter of the Year Award from Post #258.

Since joining the department in 1995, DeMaagd has served as a firefighter and an acting officer. His recent accomplishments include completing and attaining certification as a Registered Nurse. To support his wellness beliefs, DeMaagd runs marathons and participates in long distance bicycling and triathlon events.

According to Fire Chief Laura Knapp, DeMaagd is not only committed to excellent service while at work, but he has also gone above and beyond the call of service while off duty. Knapp shared that DeMaagd happened upon on the scene of a cardiac arrest after work and was an integral part of delivering patient care. A few years ago, he was bicycling through the woods with a group of friends when they came upon another bicycle rider in cardiac arrest. He was part of a group that performed CPR for more than 30 minutes.

"We are extremely proud of Ed and the work he has accomplished as a member of the Grand Rapids Fire Department," Chief Knapp said.  "He is a great example of the type of men and women who serve the residents of this great City.  I appreciate that the American Legion has taken the time to honor him and his family with this honor."

The American Legion Furniture City Post #258 will honor DeMaagd at its 2015 Firefighter of the Year Dinner tonight, Friday, April 24 at the Boat and Canoe Club (401 North Park NE, Grand Rapids).
