    • Buchanan (Stevens to Hall)
    • Canton (Buchanan to Division)
    • Ionia (Hall to Albany)

    • Le Belle (Ionia to Division)
    • Randolph (Stevens to Hall)
    • Rena (Ionia to Division)
    • Zeno (Ionia to Division)

    This project will:
    • separate combined sewer into dedicated sanitary and storm sewers. This project will separate 53 acres that currently have a combined sewer.
    • install new water main.
    • replace curb, gutter, pavement, and drive approaches.
    • upgrade sidewalks and ramps to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
    • install green infrastructure such as street trees, rain gardens, and porous pavement to retain and soak stormwater into the ground to filter pollutants and reduce runoff entering natural bodies of water.
    • create bulb-outs at intersections to create room for rain gardens, better define parking spaces, and lessen the street crossing distance for people walking.

    Construction Information
    Street Reconstruction
The following streets will receive full width reconstruction:
    • Ionia (Hall to Albany)
    • Putnam (west end to Ionia)
    • Shelby (Ionia to Division).
The following streets will receive partial reconstruction:
    • Buchanan (Stevens to Hall)
    • Canton (west end to Division)
    • Putnam (Ionia to Division)
    • Shelby (west end to Ionia)
    • Albany (west end to Division).
Some streets will include porous pavement in the parking lanes.

Streets under construction will be closed to through traffic with resident and emergency access maintained.

    Construction Hours
Typical construction hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Work is dependent upon contractor's schedule and weather.

    Driveway Approaches
Full reconstructed streets will have all driveway approaches replaced. Partially reconstructed streets will have some, but not all, driveway approaches replaced as needed for construction purposes. Residents with reconstructed driveway approaches will not have access to their driveways for 5-7 days while the work is completed and the concrete cures. The contractor will coordinate with residents in advance.

    On-Street Parking
No parking will be allowed within the project area from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., which allows contractors to complete projects quickly.

Residents will receive a door hanger notifying them of these restrictions one to two days in advance.
The contractor will place signs directly by the curb immediately before the project begins.

    • All parkways (area between the sidewalk and the road) will be restored with grass unless homeowner requests not to have this completed at their respective property. Residents are encouraged to water the area regularly to help the grass establish and prevent weed growth. Please visit the grass and lawn care page for more information.
    • Propety owners should remove all existing plantings, landscaping, etc, they want to save prior to the start of construction.
    • Property owners who have a sprinkler system are asked to mark their sprinkler heads with flags, sticks, or spray paint. Sprinklers that are broken during construction will be repaired.

    Rainbarrel Workshop
As part of the City’s efforts to better manage stormwater, residents are encouraged to participate in a rain barrel workshop hosted by the West Michigan Environmental Action Council. Please visit or call the Council at 616-451-3051 for more information.

    Sanitary Sewers
On most project streets, the storm sewer will be replaced with a new storm sewer main and stormwater inlets. On some project streets, the existing storm sewer will be removed or lined and infiltration basins will be placed

    Storm Sewer
On most project streets, the sanitary sewer will be replaced and sanitary laterals will be replaced up to the property line. On Albany (Ionia to Division), Ionia (Putnam to Shelby), and Buchanan (Stevens to Hall) the sanitary sewer will be lined and laterals will remain in place. There will be no interruption to sewer service.

    Trash, Recycling, and Mail
Recycling and refuse will be maintained but you must place your bins in their normal spots the night before your collection day. Failing to do so may result in a missed collection. When trucks cannot access your street due to construction, the contractor will move your bins to where they can be emptied and return them to your house.

    Mail delivery will be maintained.

    Water Shutdowns
Advance notice and shutdown coordination with businesses will be performed by the contractors. Typically, there will only be three water shutdowns:
    • Twice when the new main is placed in service - shutdown from 4-8 hours
    • Once when connecting individual water services for each property to the new main - 2-4 hours
Following a water shutdown, calcified deposits may be dislodged by water pressure once the system is turned back on. You may wish to run outside faucets or the faucets in all sinks to clear the lines. If some faucets are running slowly, it may be necessary to check the screens and clean off any debris.
